The world is changing — and so is teaching

I’ve always prided myself as a brick and mortar teacher for many years.  I love the smell of chalk, the sound of students chatting with each other, the ringing of the bell, co-teachers waving at me at the hallway.

Then, a virus came and changed the world.  School buildings closed.  Families huddled inside their homes.  No public graduation marches. No proms. Suddenly, we classroom teachers are faced with the only option outside our comfort zone: to teach online.

Now, we have to explore the boundaries of a screen, to greet faceless students, to type instead of to write, to ask questions like “Can you see/hear me? Can you turn on your mic?” that I’ve never asked before, to be more visual and post pictures instead of telling a story by looking at my students’ eyes.  The very existence of an online class relies fully on a working wifi and equipment.  It’s intimidating, but it’s a welcome change.

But we are ready.  We are excited.

Moving forward.
